Stores in Barboursville, Beckley, Bluefield, Bridgeport, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Charleston, Vienna and Wheeling are participating in Books-a-Million’s Bookfair Program with Read Aloud for the third time. In Charleston, both stores at Dudley Farms Plaza on Corridor G and in the Charleston Town Center mall are participating.
Read Aloud volunteers will be in stores on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 to answer questions, share information and sign up volunteers.
Read Aloud West Virginia exists to motivate children to want to read. Children who read for pleasure tend to read more. Children who read more improve their reading skills. Good reading skills support school success and employability later. Good reading skills are the foundation of an educated workforce, which fuels a more robust economy and prosperity.
Read Aloud pursues this mission with efforts in four areas:
- Hundreds of volunteer classroom readers reach thousands of children around the state every year. They serve as live “commercials” for reading, enticing children into funny books, scary books, biographies, science books or whatever catches children’s interest.
- Book distribution projects give children books of their own, that they can read, share and keep, because research shows that living in a print-rich environment supports literacy.
- Classroom book trunks and other enrichment efforts support teachers and students with collections of books they can borrow because research shows that when students have access to multiple texts on the same subject, their knowledge and literacy improves.
- Our public education efforts remind parents and teachers of their tremendous worth in setting children on a healthy path by reading to them every day from birth through adolescence.
Read Aloud West Virginia thanks Books-a-Million and supporters who are helping us change the literacy climate in West Virginia.
