Get Involved

Read Aloud West Virginia’s mission is to change the literacy culture of West Virginia by keeping reading material in the hands and on the minds of our state’s children. Motivation is the critical first step in developing any skill and Read Aloud works to motivate children to WANT to read. Our goal is to involve families, the medical community, businesses, civic groups, and the society at large in building a culture that values reading.

Become a Classroom Reader

Our classroom readers set aside a half an hour to an hour every week to read aloud to a classroom in their community, modeling the joy of reading for the students they engage with. This is one of the most fun ways to get involved with Read Aloud, as the students’ smiles, laughter, and pleas to read more highlight the impact you’re making on them and their attitudes about reading.

Find orientations for new readers in your area on our calendar. Contact your local Read Aloud chapter or the state office at 304.345.5212 or stateoffice@readaloudwestvirginia.org for more information!

Bring Read Aloud to Work

Do you think other folks at your workplace would be interested in becoming a classroom reader? We’ll do an orientation just for you and your coworkers!

Does your workplace provide sponsorships to local nonprofits working to improve your community? If you open the door and point us in the right direction, we’re more than happy to pitch ourselves to your company for their support!

Get Crafty

One of our regular events, Snuggle & Read, targets children from birth to preschool and their families, encouraging them to snuggle and read together by providing each child with a book and blanket. If you’ve got some sewing or crafting skills, we could use your help putting these blankets together! Contact the state office at 304.345.5212 or stateoffice@readaloudwestvirginia.org for patterns and current needs.
